Abstract: This communication investigates the relationship between translation and literature, aiming to determine to what extent translation history and criticism belong to the “disciplines for literature.” Starting from the paratextual apparatus of several emblematic translations (Flaubert, Maupassant, Proust), we will study the various difficulties posed by the import of foreign works into the Romanian literary heritage. The necessity and, sometimes, even the emergency of a retranslation show that the relation between retranslation and literature is a dynamic and mutual one, constantly adapting to changes and new conditions. Translation history and criticism bear testimony to this phenomenon.
