Abstract: This article examines the deeply antimodern stance at the core of Benjamin Fondane’s plea for a re-enchantment of the world and of poetry. To Fondane, only by regaining a primitive, mythical worldview can we rediscover poetry and reality as consubstantial. In this defence of the existential import of poetry, Fondane displays a very personal polemical style, not exempt from contradictions and paradox.
