Manifeste pour Fondane

MAGDA CÂRNECI

Abstract: In this literary manifesto, I take position to acknowledge that Fondane’s philosophy and poetical views about modern man and modernity, as they were lived by him in the 1930-1940, are still forceful and valuable. His concepts about the “evils of the 20th century”, “unhappy consciousness”, “apocalypse of pure rationalism”, or “irresignation” are still impressive and inspiring, as well as the role Fondane assigned to poetry. Poetry remains for Benjamin Fondane an “intimate function of the universe”, capable of saving man’s interiority and opening his mind to a possible evolution towards a “more than pure human”.
