Abstract: The notion of presence takes shape in Michel Leiris’s work when he shifts from surrealism to ethnography. Therefore, the word “presence” begins to appear in his writings starting from the early 30s, when, after attending Marcel Mauss’s lectures, Leiris accepts to embark on Marcel Griaule’s expedition to Africa and to keep the diary of the mission.
