Abstract: The article makes a plea for the necessity of understanding the canon as a sequence of choices founded on the aesthetic value, in its turn based on a writing tradition and on the preservation of aesthetic autonomy. The reader and the literary work share a symbiotic relationship, vouched by a continuous quest for the latent truth hidden in the text.
