Abstract: The article deals with the way literature (and the novel in particular) tackles the relation between consciousness and alterity, thus responding to the basic human aspiration of transcending the confines of what is known and gaining access to the other’s interiority. The author explores the way narrative devices such as voice and perspective, and themes such as the double enable us to engage the other in the world of fiction.
