Abstract: The author traces a brief history of literary theory, highlighting the most significant contributions to the development of the discipline from Formalism to Deconstruction, and focusing on the way in which the evolution of literary theory towards autonomy is replaced, with the advent of cultural studies, by a gradual shift towards heteronomy. Once we are no longer preoccupied with clear-cut distinctions between literary and non-literary texts or between literature and culture, the theory of literature turns into a theory of culture.
